Lichen, Pothole, and Mac's Falls in Panthertown
A hike done June 6, 2016 with Mark. Starting from the Cold Mountain trailhead in Panthertown, we hiked up Devil's Elbow Trail to the cut off for Elbow and Red Butt Falls. Then, right upstream from Red Butt, we got into the river, and walked downstream for half a mile until the tributary on which Lichen Falls is located joined the Tuckasegee on river left. After thoroughly enjoying that waterfall, we headed back into the river, going downstream a short ways until we found a spot on the hillside on river right where we could start the short but steep bushwhack back up to Devil's Elbow Trail. We ended the hike by hiking upstream from Schoolhouse Falls as far as Pothole and Mac's Falls, and then followed Mac's Trail back to the parking area.
